l WHY CANT THE
BUS STOP AT MY HOUSE?
School districts are not required to provide
door-to-door transportation for any child, not even
those in kindergarten. Pick-up points can be established
for efficiency and economy reasons. All students are
expected to travel a certain distance to their bus stop.
A bus stop is a series of maneuvers designed with safety
as the utmost concern. The driver follows set procedures
in executing the stop. Stopping, observing, opening the
door, boarding or releasing of students are all steps
taken to ensure a safe stop. It is safer for these stops
to be spread out so the driver can complete all of these
actions.
l MY CHILD HAS
TO CROSS TWO STREETS TO GET TO THE BUS STOP. WHAT ARE
YOU DOING TO INSURE MY CHILD GETS TO AND FROM THE STOP
SAFELY?
It is the responsibility of the parents to get the child
to and from the bus stop safely. It is the district’s
responsibility to give the child a safe place to be
picked up and dropped off. The Commissioner of Education
and the Court of Appeals have acknowledged that all
roadside pick-up points are hazardous to some degree and
that no such location can be absolutely safe. Therefore,
the Commissioner of Education has held that parents are
legally responsible for the safety of the children while
walking between home and pick-up points.
l THE STOP IS UP
THE STREET, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF MY HOME. DOES MY
CHILD HAVE TO CROSS THE STREET?
It is your choice to either let your child stand on the
correct side when the bus comes, or wait until the bus
arrives and then cross on the driver’s signal, with the
lights activated. We prefer the latter, as the bus can
control traffic and ensure a safer crossing.
l WHEN SHOULD MY
CHILD ARRIVE AT THE BUS STOP?
All students should be ready and waiting at the bus stop
five minutes before the bus is due to arrive.
l WHAT IF IT IS
BAD WEATHER OUTSIDE, CAN MY CHILD WAIT IN THE HOUSE OR
CAR?
If it is bad weather, children are still required to
be outside five minutes before the bus is due to arrive.
It is for the safety of your children that this is
required. Children who are walking or running from the
car or across the street are in danger of tripping and
falling near the bus, and of not being in the driver’s
line of vision.
