Avoid summer brain drain—keep your kids
engaged in learning
JULY
2009— For
some kids, the skills they acquire during the school
year are ancient history by summer’s end. Without the
routine of daily classes, important reading and math
proficiency skills can suffer, and as June turns into
July and then August, some students find themselves
unprepared for the start of the new school year.
It’s a fact that over the summer most students—regardless
of family income or background—lose two to two and a half
months of the math computational skills that they learned
during the school year. Students from low-income homes lose
two to three months of reading skills learned during the school year, according to studies conducted by
Johns Hopkins University, the University of Tennessee, and
the University of Virginia (Washington Post).

Summer school: July 6-August 6
JULY
2009—Middle School summer school will run from July 6
through August 6. Registration will take place
from June 29-July 2 in the
Middletown High School Library/Media Center
from 8 a.m.-noon.
