High schoolers compete in
poetry recitation contest
Senior
Laura Griffin
off to state competition
The words of Edgar Allan Poe, Langston Hughes, Robert
Frost, and Maya Angelou, among others, were heard
on Wednesday, January 6, as more than 25 Middletown High School
students participated in the third annual Poetry Out
Loud Contest.
Twelfth-grader Sadie Isseks was named the
winner, followed by second-and third-place finishers
Laura Griffin and Leannette McPhatter, also
seniors at the school.
One by one students took to the stage to recite two
poems of their choice as part of the competition,
sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)
and the Poetry Foundation. Aiming to foster the next
generation of literary readers by capitalizing on the
latest trends in poetry, including recitation and
performance, the January 6 school-wide competition was
the second step toward advancing to the regional Poetry
Out Loud Contest.
The regional competition was held in
February and Laura Griffin
was
named a regional winner! She recently competed in the New
York State Poetry Out Loud finals in early March and
placed third.
