Kids give back to community this holiday
season
Kids
at Maple Hill Elementary School gave back to the
community
just
in time for the Thanksgiving holiday
by collecting non-perishable food items, toys, and coats
for
The Family
Empowerment Council.
According to
Amelia McKenna, second-grade teacher and coordinator of
the drive, about 15 boxes were donated.
"In these hard economic times more families in need are
accessing community organizations and resources," said
McKenna. "It's important that we

Special thanks to all those who donated!
Students
celebrate Red Ribbon Week by pledging to be
drug-free
Maple
Hill Elementary School was among thousands of
schools pledging to be drug-and-alcohol free during Red Ribbon Week, held
October 23-31.
This year, students at the school
signed a pledge
banner promising to live
drug-and-alcohol-free lives,
participated in a variety of
dress-up days, and activities
aimed
at raising students’ awareness of the pitfalls of drug and alcohol use.
"This week was an opportunity to highlight the
importance of staying drug-and-alcohol free,"
said teacher Dana Fontanez. "It
made students more aware of
how important it is to make good choices and stay
away from drugs and alcohol."
Red
Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest
annual drug-prevention campaign in the country. It
was started in 1988 to raise awareness of the
dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and
encourage prevention and early intervention.
