Students
celebrate Red Ribbon Week by pledging to be
drug-free
Maple
Hill Elementary School was among thousands of
schools pledging to be drug-and-alcohol free across
the nation during Red Ribbon Week, held
October 23-31.
This year, students at the school
signed a pledge
banner promising to live
drug-and-alcohol-free lives,
participated in a variety of
dress-up days,
such as
"Living Drug-Free Is No Sweat
Day," where students were asked to wear sweats to
school, and activities
aimed
at raising students’ awareness of the pitfalls that
come with drug and alcohol use.
According to
Dana Fontanez, teacher and organizer of Red Ribbon
Week events at the school, this week was
especially important.
"This week was an opportunity to highlight the
importance of staying drug-and-alcohol free,"
said Fontanez. "It
made students more aware of
how important it is to make good choices and stay
away from drugs and alcohol."
Red
Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest
annual drug-prevention campaign in the country. It
was started in 1988 to raise awareness of the
dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and
encourage prevention and early intervention.
