Health Office Procedures for Distributing Medications

When it becomes necessary for a student to take medication during school hours, the nurse will cooperate with the family physician and parents. Medication will be administered by the school nurse, administrator (or a designee in the absence of a school nurse) providing the following conditions are met:

l The authorization for dispensing medication form is completed.

l Medication is in the original container, labeled with the name of the medicine and dosage, student's name, physician's name, amount and time to be given. Improperly identified medication will not be administered.

l Nonprescription medications must have a physician's written recommendation (same as for prescription drugs).

l Injectables can only be administered on an emergency basis.

Please note: All medicines must be brought to the school by the parent or guardian, not by the student. Students may not carry any medicine with them! Students who are found with medicine or drugs are in violation of the Board of Education policy and New York Education Law. All medication must be left by the parent with the school nurse or administrator, together with the appropriate form.
