Parents Apart helps children cope with separation
& divorce
Parents Apart, an educational program
offered to parents in the Middletown City School District, is
one of the programs provided through the Safe
Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) grant. The 6-hour course,
scheduled for two hours on three consecutive
evenings four times a year, is designed to help
separating, divorced, and never-married parents focus on
the special needs of their children during the
reorganization of their family. Parents learn how
parenting apart affects children and adults, how parents
can emotionally support their children during this
transition, and effective parenting apart strategies. Legal information is also presented by a matrimonial
attorney.
This program is open to anyone living in the school district,
but parents should register in advance and are encouraged to
attend the entire 3-session series. Both parents are never
registered in the same classes.
Parents who have attended Parents Apart have found it very
helpful. Comments on post-class surveys from participating
Middletown parents have included:
-
“Great
class. Please continue to empower and educate those who are
separated or divorced.”
-
“Helpful
information and skills taught on how to communicate better
with my children.”
-
“Thank you
for a well-taught class.”
-
“It was
helpful to have a chance to talk about
my experiences.”
Everyone in the family can benefit from this program as its focus
is on helping parents help their children in what can
be a difficult, challenging situation and time for the entire
family.
