The Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) grant is a unique collaboration among the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and the Department of Justice. Created in 1999, in response to rising concerns about national youth violence and school safety, the grant empowers communities and school districts throughout the country to work together to provide safe and supportive environments for kids.

Our district received the SS/HS grant in 2006 ($5.7 million over three years) and is collaborating with local juvenile justice, law enforcement and mental health agencies to provide:

  • Safe school environments

  • Violence, alcohol, and drug prevention and early intervention services

  • School and community mental health preventive and treatment intervention services

  • Early childhood psychosocial and emotional development

For more information about the SS/HS grant, contact John Szakmary, at (845) 326-1690.
