Literacy Coaches: Literacy Coaches are designated per building grades Pre K – 12 to support literacy instruction all classrooms. They work directly with classroom teachers individually, in small groups and whole staff on learning and implementing Middletown’s standards based curriculum, analyzing student data and student work, modeling instructional practices, and accelerating learning for all students. Through their work literacy coaches provide demonstration lessons, support student learning

Reading Teachers: Reading teachers (interventionists) work directly with students who are eligible for Title 1 and AIS services. They assist with diagnosis; provide remedial instruction and services, to students in the area of English Language Arts. An equally important role is the maintenance of communication with classroom teachers relative to student progress and the literacy program in general. Classroom teachers are encouraged to consult with the building reading teachers for direction and guidance in developing individual student and general classroom program goals.

Literacy Teachers (Grades 6-9): The Literacy teachers are certified literacy teachers who work with students in grades 6-9 providing specific reading and writing strategies to assist students in becoming proficient readers, writers, listeners, and speakers. Literacy teachers work closely with all core content area teachers in regards to the literacy needs of the students in their classes.

ESL Teachers: ESL teachers work directly with students who receive ESL services as determined through the NYSESLAT. They assist with identification of English proficiency; provide support services in the area of English Language Arts. An equally important role is the maintenance of communication with classroom teachers relative to student progress in their development of the English language. Classroom teachers are encouraged to consult with the building ESL teachers for direction and guidance in developing individual student and general classroom program goals.

Special Education Teachers: Special Education Teachers work directly with students in the area of English Language Arts as identified through the student’s IEP. They assist with diagnosis; provide instruction and support in the area of English Language Arts. The inclusion teacher works very closely with the classroom teacher in maintaining communication relative to the students’ progress and the literacy program.
