offering aid to Haiti

Middletown schools are
helping the victims of the Haiti earthquake
by donating $8,834.42 to the American Red Cross Haitian
Relief Fund.
On Friday, February 5, district officials
and Middletown students presented the donation to
American Red Cross

to the Class of 2010
Twenty-five high school seniors graduated on Wednesday, February 3,
from Middletown High School in a ceremony held in the
school's theater. Congratulations to all graduates and their

Regents chancellor praises district
On Thursday, January 28,
Chancellor Merryl Tisch of the New York State Board of
Regents toured Middletown City Schools. Before
she left, she declared Middletown a model district—calling it
"first-rate, well-run" and an example for others.

Strings
students and high school chamber singers perform for chancellor
On
Thursday, January 28,
students enrolled in the strings and choral programs
were excited to show off all they've been
practicing this school year to Chancellor Merryl
Tisch.
More than 350 strings students in grades 3-6, along with
the Middletown High School Chamber Singers, performed
for the chancellor during her visit to Middletown.

Middle
school tracks open for use
New
tracks at Monhagen and Twin Towers Middle Schools will
be open for public use as of Monday, February 1, weather
permitting.

Scholastic
Regional Art Award winners announced
Students from around the district proved their artistic
talents by taking home 115 awards in the Hudson Valley
Scholastic Art Awards competition.
Ten Middletown students were named
Gold Key & Silver Key Award winners, beating out more
than 1,000 submissions from schools in Dutchess, Orange,
Sullivan, and Ulster counties.
Middletown had an additional 48 Honorable Mention Award
winners and 56 Participation Award winners.

Middies boys’ basketball team undefeated
The Middletown varsity boys’ basketball team is on
its way to its first undefeated regular season in school
history.
Off to a 13-0 start, the team has no shortage of talent this
season. From go-to players Nick Smith and Rob Hueston to
defensive stoppers Mike Smith and Phil Medero, the Middies
are showing a big turnaround from last year—they won just
three games in 2008-09.

Elementary schools establish honor society chapter
Maple Hill and
Mechanicstown Elementary Schools have joined 30 other
elementary schools from across the state as founding
members of
the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS).
The schools are also the first in Orange County to
establish NEHS chapters.

Students celebrate
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Civil Rights Movement
Students across the district
celebrated Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. on Friday, January 15, with
a variety of
classroom activities centered around
one of the nation's most prominent civil
rights leaders.
At Middletown High School a special
performance of The Right to Dream—a
presentation portraying one of America’s most important times in
history, the Civil Rights Movement—was put on for students by the Living Voices group.
High-schoolers got to witness what it was like to a part
of the Movement and were reminded about the importance
of America’s promise of equal human and civil rights for
all.
Middletown to host 2010-11 state boys’ soccer final four
Middletown will host the 2010 and 2011 boys' soccer
state final fours after the state soccer committee and
executive committee unanimously approved Section IX's
bid on Thursday, January 21.

State aid payments released
Governor David Paterson
released complete state aid to public schools
across the state on Friday, January 15, after it was
delayed in mid-December as part the state's strategy to
deal with the current fiscal crisis.
Paterson’s announcement that the aid
would be released on Friday, the result in part of
revenue received in January, effectively ends a lawsuit
brought by New York State teachers’ unions and school
officials who contended Paterson’s delay was a cut and
wouldn’t be restored.
SMART Boards link students
Forget
chalkboards, SMART Boards are where it's at.
Just ask kids at Maple
Hill Elementary School, where students are using
SMART Board technology to connect to classrooms across
the globe.

High schoolers compete in Poetry Recitation Contest
The words of Edgar Allan Poe, Langston Hughes, Robert Frost,
and Maya Angelou, among others, were heard Wednesday night
as more than 25 Middletown High School students participated
in the third annual Poetry Out Loud Contest.
Twelfth-grader Sadie Isseks was named the
winner, followed by second-and third-place finishers
Laura Griffin and Leannette McPhatter, also
seniors at the school.

Rachel's
Challenge sends positive message
to kids
The Rachel's
Challenge program, which came to Middletown on
Thursday, December 10, challenged students to create a chain
reaction of kindness and compassion in their school and
community.
The program, based on the writings and ideals of Rachel
Scott,
killed in the 1999 Columbine High School tragedy, aimed
to inspire students to continue Rachel's message—to
treat others with words of kindness and compassion in an
effort to make the world a better place.
The hour-long presentation featured footage from the
Columbine tragedy and video of Rachel's life, designed
to encourage students to seek positive changes for
themselves and those around them.

Keeping
students, parents, and the community informed isn't just
important—it’s a priority in Middletown. As a result,
the district has launched
SchoolMessenger—a
notification system that delivers voice, e-mail, and SMS
messages to users on matters such as attendance, events,

What's new with the flu?
With
health officials expecting
the seasonal
flu and
H1N1 virus to impact schools and communities,
the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued
recommendations
and precautions parents can
take to help their child from contacting the seasonal flu
and H1N1 virus.
